Use of bot to create mischief

One mischievous person uses a bot (automated program) to register my email address in several mailing lists. I get 200 requests (and still continuing) to confirm my registration. It takes me 1 minute to delete them. That mischievous person commits a serious offence under the Misuse of Computer Act. If he is caught, he can go to jail and be slapped with a serious penalty. ......

Enforce the law on Computer Misuse

Some people think that it is fun to create mischief by misusing another person's NRIC to log into SingPass or to use the other person's email address to register into a mailing list.  They may not be aware that they are committing an offense under the Computer Misuse Act: It is a crime for the mischievous person to try to access my account.  https://sso.agc.gov.sg/Act/CMA1993......

Convene committee to help small charities manage donations

I began volunteering actively with my wife in the mid-1990s and, since then, we have seen first-hand how the whole social service ecosystem has evolved. While the system is still far from perfect, the good work by the Government and the various agencies, such as the National Council of Social Service (NCSS), the National Volunteer and Philanthropy Centre (NVPC) and the Community Foundation of Singapore, supported by an enthusiastic full-time social wo......

Why didn't IMDA check with MHA regarding concert?

I support the Government's decision to cancel Swedish black metal band Watain's concert (IMDA pulls plug on gig hours before Swedish band's show, March 8). The Infocomm Media Development Authority (IMDA) has much to answer for. Why did IMDA approve the concert in the first place, given that an online search would reveal the band's repertoire of anti-Christian songs, stage set-ups involving Satanic imagery and concert antics that include......

Japan NHK's report on Singapore social support system inaccurate

There is a need to correct the reporting perspective by Japan broadcaster NHK in its Jan 22 feature titled Singapore's Other Side. A clip of the report from the NHK World website is making its rounds among Singaporeans by Whatsapp. The feature's main focus was on the founder of charity Willing Hearts, Mr Tony Tay, and his organisation's efforts in helping Singapore's disadvantaged. This is laudable and would have been great, if not for ......

Promote democracy through the social media

I saw an article in the Economist that describe the new govt in Cuba using social media actively. The article said that this is a good step but it is better to have democracy. I have this perspective. It is a good step to have active communication through social media. It allows the people to share information and to hold the govt accountable. It also improves transparency and reduces corrupti......

Get permit to install CCTV

Closed-circuit television cameras installed by private entities overlooking public spaces, as well as dash cams in vehicles, are a boon in terms of curbing anti-social behaviour and crime, but they may be a bane to privacy too. In Singapore, where there are police cameras and artificial intelligence-operated cameras on the roads, is it necessary for private individuals and corporations to install such cameras of thei......

Concern about cyber security

Reading the newspapers, there seem to be a lot of concern about cyber security. This matter is also actively discussed in Parliament.  I wish to give my views on this issue. a) I agree that we should strengthen control of online computer systems to prevent hacking and stealing of the data. b) I do not agree with the paranoia over the data that has been stolen. I was one of the 1.5 million patients whose records were ......

How to eradicate unsolicited calls

I have registered my mobile phone under the Do Not Call Register.  I receive a phone call from a Singapore mobile No. It is for a telemarketer calling about a financial market product.  I decided to take the trouble to lodge a complaint with PDPA. I went to https://donotcall.gov.sg. I got a warning from it is an "unsafe" site. What? The PDPA site is "unsafe"?  Yes - they do not use https:// A govt agency? W......

Improve the library facilities

Dear sir, Singapore government was great. In the early days, they sees a library as an essential facilities. They allocate land to build library. Today we sees such libraries at places like Toa Payoh and Ang Mo Kio. The library of today is getting smaller. Perhaps times has changed. I however thought that Library could still play an important role. For example, Libraries could in-cooperate a innovation centre where the public could ......

Shortsighted

I attended a briefing by the Privacy and Data Protection Commission (PDPC) on the recording of NRIC No in computer systems. The PDPC said that the NRIC No can be recorded if it is allowed by law. If not, the new privacy law does not allow the NRIC No to be recorded. The PDPC spelled out the situations were the recording is allowed, and other situations were it is not allowed. This includes the recording of NRIC No for lucky draws and for visitors to buildings and co......

Dear Outreach, PDP Commission Thank you for conducting the briefing and for sending the presentation materials to me. Briefing by PDP Commission on use of NRIC

Dear Outreach I will be attending the meeting on Monday 17 Sept 10 am at 10 Pasir Panjang Road. I wish to bring up the following issues: a) Use of NRIC A unique advantage that Singapore has over many countries is our NRIC. It helps to identify a person. We should allow the NRIC No to be used to identify a person, e.g. for a lucky draw.  There is no need to keep the NRIC confidential. A person's ......

Our civil servants love to send a complicated FAQ to the public to do simple things. Do you have an option to select "All Services". Captcha

The government agencies provide Captcha that are quite troublesome to users providing feedback.  It is difficult to tell the difference between the letter l and the number 1 or the letter O and the number 0. The fonts are also difficult to read.  I never implement Captcha on the Feedback forms to my website.  I get the occasional feedback generated by bots. I ignore them. I do not find it necessary to punish the ordinary folks just because of s......

Exorbitant charge for data roaming

When I arrived in Jakarta, I received a SMS alert that my data roaming charge was $20. This was for downloading 2 MB of data.  I thought earlier signed on a data package for 1 GB for $5, but I was not aware that the data package had expired.  Why should the mobile operator charge $20 for 2 MB, which is 2,000 times of their package rate?  I think it is reasonable for them to charge 5 or even 10 times of their package rate, but 2,......

Exorbitant charge for data roaming

I turned on data roaming on my mobile phone as I thought that the data package was active. I was mistaken. When I arrived in Jakarta, I received a SMS alert that I had already exceeded $20 of data usage. I checked with Starhub. The data used was 2 MB. The data package cost $5 for 1 GB. Without the data package, I would have to pay $10,000 for 1 GB. Why is the charge 2,000 times of the package price? ......

Hacking of SingHealth database

I suggest that SingHealth should tell the public how the hacker was able to access the data. It might get some ideas from the public on how such hacking could be prevented. It does not help when the people involved said that it is due to "sophisticated hacking" possibly by a state sponsored organization. Similar cases of massive hacking activities in other countries are also kept secret - I th......

I do not bother if they get access to my prescriptions. What for? ......
