Building inspections should be properly conducted

The building collapse in Cambodia and other such mishaps in other countries over the years show the need to be vigilant about building standards and checks. While there are strong regulatory frameworks in place to prevent building collapses here, things cannot be taken for granted. One of these is the area of having inspections carried out every 10 years for residential buildings. I had a first-hand experience last year w......

Pre-emptive measures urgently needed to curb falling objects

It may be unrealistic to expect building owners to frequently check structural installations like windows, wall tiles, glass panels, concrete beams and metal cladding. Perhaps the Building and Construction Authority (BCA) could curb those mishaps with compulsory periodic inspections (Building owners must step up maintenance checks, by Mr Andrew Seow Chwee Guan, April 13). Singapore ranks as the third-most densely populated country in th......

Building owners must step up maintenance checks

It horrified me to read about the metal panels that almost injured a woman (Woman escapes being hit by falling metal panels, April 7). In recent years, there have been incidents of falling glass, wall tiles, windows and metal panels, as well as other concrete structures. As more high-rise buildings are built, the responsibility lies with building owners to step up their preventive maintenance to ensure such materials are secure to avoid......

Was it 'freak accident' or neglect of duties?

I do not quite agree with the report (SBS Transit bus hit by pipe in freak accident, Jan 3). The report stated that a loose PVC pipe, blown by the wind, crashed into and smashed the window of an SBS bus. Increasingly, I notice a tendency to explain away incidents such as this as "freak" accidents. Clearly the incident was caused by a loose PVC pipe which had been left about as a result of improper handling, transportation or stowage. I ......

Security staff can play a role in escalator safety

I refer to the report on the rising incidence of damage to escalators due to errant behaviour by users (Users the main cause of escalator incidents; Dec 21). The Building and Construction Authority said it encourages escalator operators to put up new posters and stickers on escalator safety. I am very sceptical of the effectiveness of this approach. Instead, I suggest a two-pronged approach. First, security personnel at MRT stations, concourses and platforms, as wel......

Empower condo managements to enforce by-laws

I wish to urge the relevant authorities to look into the issues behind maintaining a condominium estate (Judge orders condo owner to restore balcony's design; Dec 4). As demonstrated in that article, the management corporation (MC) had to resort to suing an owner of a condo unit for not following its by-laws. This system of recourse is not the most effective use of resources. As a condo dweller who sits on the MC, I appeal to the relevant authorities ......

Have a demerit point system for building professionals

Over the past year, I have endured various problems and inconveniences arising from the reconstruction of our neighbour's house. These included repeated flooding in different parts of our property, the severing of our front lamp post and the erection of scaffolding on our roof. Perhaps the worst was a plank falling onto our driveway. We also discovered that the professional engineer for the project was unregistered . Our complaints to various governme......
