Tan Kin Lian - Perspectives
Qualification of MPs
The candidates for election from different political parties share a common goal, that is, a desire to serve the people of Singapore.
It is wrong to describe the candidates from the ruling party as being good for Singapore and the other parties as being bad for Singapore.
The main criterion to evaluate the candidates is their desire to serve the people, rather than to serve their personal interests.
We have seen elected MPs who hardly speak about the hardships and aspirations of the ordinary people in Parliament. Many of them do not attend Parliament sittings regularly or do not speak up when they attend the sittings. Some even sleep in Parliament.
Do not judge any candidate poorly because of an adverse past record. Nobody is perfect. We should give them a chance to serve the people in the future. This should apply to candidates from the ruling party and from the other parties.
Many of the candidates from the opposition parties are dedicated and wish to serve the people, if they get the chance to be elected.
Although some may not be highly qualified, they are capable of doing a good job as an MP. They can do a better job than the current elected MPs who treat the MP as a part time job and do not pay much attention to this work.
We should vote for the dedicated MPs who wish to serve the people.
