Access to the internet in China
Many people believed that China does not allow access to the Internet. Their citizens are badly informed about the world.

These critics are mistaken.

China provides access to the Internet using their China platforms, such as Baidu, Weibo, etc.

I believe that the Chinese citizens are quite knowledgeable about what is going on around the world. Maybe, they are more knowledgeable than the average Singaporeans.

Why does China ban the use of the platforms, such as Google, Facebook and Twitter?

There are concerns about data privacy and national security. The data are stored in the servers in foreign countries. The data can be analyzed to find out the activities of these individuals. These individuals can be subject to blackmail and extortion, based on their online activities.

Imagine the threat to China when the data in these platforms can be used by the US intelligence agencies to know the individuals in China and their activities.

The US intelligence agencies have been rampant in conducting spying operations and other nefarious activities.

It is prudent for China to insist that the browsing of the internet should be carried out using the platforms controlled by China.

This restriction may pose difficulty for foreigners living in China who need to communicate with people outside of China using the platforms that they are familiar with.

I understand that they are able and allowed to access these foreign platforms using the VPN technology.

The criticism of the practice of the China authorities is not justified.
