Restructure the bus network
Dear Minister,

You said recently that the traffic on our bus services had dropped by 60% during the pandemic and that there will be a review after the pandemic. see report

In this review, I suggest the following points be considered:

1) The bus network was developed many decades ago, when the MRT system was not as widespread as it is today.

2) In the review, we should make the MRT as the backbone of the public transport system as the network is now quite extensive and covers most parts of Singapore.

2) We should improve the local bus services to bring commuters to the MRT stations. Perhaps, the local services should have a frequency of every 1 or 2 minute.

3) We should make better use of our LRT system in Sengkang, Punggol and Bukit Panjang. These system should use more reliable trains that can move faster and have a waiting time of 1 minute during peak hours.

4) We can remove many long distance bus services which duplicate the MRT services.

5)  We can introduce express bus service that connect the bus interchanges in the towns and runs on expressways. They should not pick up passengers along the way. This express bus services can provide better connection between the towns and supplement the MRT services.

6)  With a simplified structure based on the hub and spoke arrangement, it will be easier to plan the frequency of the services to achieve an optimal level of usage, reduce the operating cost and provide a better experience for commuters.

I hope that you can consider this approach in the review of the network of bus services.

Tan Kin Lian
