Covid-19 crisis
A sensible approach towards containing the virus
I observed that we are probably carrying out about 5,000 to 10,000 tests every day and that there was hardly any cases of covid infection detected. I said that it is safe to conclude that the virus is no longer a problem and the circuit breaker can be lifted.
Someone disagreed with me. He said that we should test everybody (as it was done in China) to be sure that the virus has been completely eradicated.
I find his approach to be illogical and extreme.
Here are my reasons.
1. If the virus is spreading in the community, we should be able to detect several cases every day.
2. These cases are mild, but they can be detected with testing.
3. A few of these mild cases can become serious and require treatment in hospital. These cases will be detected with temperature screening.
If the cases that are detected remains a small handful each day, and hardly any become serious to need hospital care, we can conclude that the risk is very small.
There is no need to continue the extreme measures, such as mandatory wearing of mask or other restrictions on social activities.
