Covid-19 crisis
UK approach towards containment
I like the approach that is adopted in the UK to contain the corona virus.
They implemented the following strategy
a) Ask for 500,000 volunteers to take care of 1.5 elderly people. The volunteers will bring groceries, food and other essentials to the elderly people, so that they can stay at home and avoid being infected by the virus. Within a day or two, over 400,000 people have responded. Well done.
b) They are building a special hospital with 2 wards and 4,000 beds by using a sports stadium. This allows the infected persons to be quarantined, so that they do not infect the general population. The special hospital deals only with the infected cases, and do not handle the other illnesses. It will take the patient load from the regular hospitals.
The capacity of this special hospital is likely to meet the immediate needs. If there is a bigger demand, the capacity can be expanded or another hospital can be set up quite quickly.
c) They have also implemented restrictions on gathering of people in the public places of entertainment. They encouraged the people to stay at home for the immediate future.
I believe that the approach will work. I find the leadership provided by PM Boris Johnson to be quite good. I wish the UK all the best in their effort to contain the virus.
