A more sensible way to name our roads
The naming of our roads in the new housing estates of Sengkang and Punggol is quite ridiculous. Take a look at the map below.

Here are some of the faults:

a) There is no logical order
b) There is no respect for hierarchy, with the name Street, Way, Avenue, Road used for roads of similar sizes.

What is a better system?

We can follow the approach adopted in many cities. They gave a different name to major road and number the smaller roads branching off the major road as streets. The lanes branching off the streets are called lanes. For long roads, the identify the different sections.

Let me give an example of how I would rename the roads in Sengkang (see map below)

a) Roads running from West to East will be named as Sengkang Road 1, 2, 3, etc
b) Roads running from North to South will be renamed as Sengkang Drive 1, 2, 3 etc.
c) Each road will be broken into section 1, 2, 3 to show the intersection with another major road.

Following this concept:
a) Anchorvale St, Compassvale St, and Riverdale Dr can be renamed as Sengkang Road 1
b) Sengkang East Way can be renamed as Sengkang Road 2
c) Anchorvale Drive and Compassvale Drive can be renamed as Sengkang Road 3
d) Sengkang East Avenue can be renamed as Sengkang Road 4
e) Anchorvale Drive can be renamed as Sengkang Drive 1
f) Anchorvale Link will be renamed as Sengkang Drive 2
g) Sengkang East Road will be renamed as Sengkang Drive 3
h) Compassvale Road will be renamed as Sengkang Drive 4
i) Punggol Road will remain for historical reason
j) Rivervale Drive will be renamed as Sengkang Drive 5
k) Sengkang East Drive will be renamed as Sengkang Drive 6

Using my suggested naming system, it will be easy to move around Sengkang.

Vote - is the new naming system easier for the public to remember?
