Movement for change
Attitude towards work
There are many reports that many local PMETs are being retrenched and in some cases, replaced by foreigners. Is the work attitude of the locals a factor that cause employers to prefer foreigners?
I like to bring up this case for discussion.
A hawker working in a canteen was looking for a stall assistant. She was willing to pay $10 per hour. This is much higher than the $6 paid by many fast food outlets. She need to get a Singaporean.
A person who works 8 hours a day over 20 years can earn $1,600. It is adequate.
I tried to help her to get a helper. I advertised this vacancy in Facebook on several occasions over the past months. There was no response.
Finally, someone replied to tell me that he is interested. He is in the early 20s. I connected him to the hawker. They arranged an appointment.
The young man did not show up. He did not inform the hawker. He did not give the reason for not appearing or offer to arrange another time.
This is a bad attitude.
I am not saying that this is typical of many Singaporean workers. But sometimes I wonder if this is the kind of problems that make employers prefer to employ foreign workers, rather than Singaporeans?
The hawker needs to get a Singaporean as a stall assistant because she does not have any quota to employ a foreign worker.
The young man probably have to deal with many other demands on his daily life that a foreign worker does not. He may have to attend skill or upgrading course, or NS reservist training. Surely, this can be discussed and worked out?
There are many reports about PMETs being replaced by foreign workers. I wonder if the older PMETs have problems of work attitude that make employers prefer foreign workers?
