Political systems
Weakness of the US system of governance
The erratic behavior of President Trump reflect the weakness of the American system of governance.
The system was built to provide check and balance between the three branches of government - legislative, executive and judiciary, but it cannot control the erratic behavior of the president.
President Trump imposed tariffs on several countries on his own. There was no way that the Congress (i.e. legislature) could stop him. His actions appear to have the disapproval of a large proportion of citizens, who will be adversely affected.
His tariffs is tantamount to imposing a tax on consumers. Usually a tax increase has to be debated and approved by Congress.
What is an alternative system?
In the UK system, Parliament (legislature) can pass a motion of "no confidence" in the prime minister (executive). The government can be replaced.
The prime minister in the UK does not make decisions on his own. The decisions are made by majority vote of the cabinet, comprising of the ministers. It does not lead to one person acting on his own, and in an erratic manner.
On balance, I prefer the UK parliament system, rather than the US presidential system.
