Retrenchment in a German company
A German told me. He worked as an engineer in a German company for more than 20 years.
The company had to retrench some of its staff due to unprofitability caused by globalization.
He was retrenched. How was he selected?
As he was not married, it was easier for him to adjust to the retrenchment. Those workers with family commitments were retained. This is an excellent employment practice.
In Singapore, the workers who are retrenched are liked to be the most costly or deemed to be "less productive". But in practice, the selection could be based on favoritism.
We need to improve our employment practice in Singapore. We can learn from the good practice adopted in some countries (but not America).
